" The Punta Mala Girls  "


This Voluntary Program is part of the " cooperation agreement "  exists between the agency and the program ASVO of the Ministry of Environment and Energy ( MINAE ), institution of  the government of Costa Rica that administrate and protect all the  system of  National Parks and Natural Reserves of country.


This program is very similar to " Playa Hermosa " project but develops in a different place called  " Punta Mala " Wild Life Shelter located on  " Punta Judas " beach, province of  Puntarenas, central Pacific coast of Costa Rica.


Punta Mala is a protected beach area of around 2 miles long surrounded of private lands dedicated to farming and cattle raising and where is possible to find a little mangrove, evenly, dedicated to the protection of  " The Parrot Turtle ".


From July to January of every year, hundreds of turtles of this specie in danger of extinction,  come to lay from 90 to 120 eggs per head on this beach area, in a spectacular natural  phenomenon.


Main attractions of Shelter: the yearly visit of " The Parrot Turtle " from July to January having the chance to have a direct contact with this beautiful species.

A nice beach area where is possible to take a bath on the sea, sun tanning and practice surfing.

Additionally Punta Judas beach is part from a long coast strip that includes other beaches as West Esterillos and East Esterillos, all famous for its quietness, privacy and good waves, so that  Volunteers that choose this program will dispose of  a good beach area where to approach their times off.

 

The shelter disposes of services as:


· Electricity.

· Potable Water

· Rustic Ranch where lodge both volunteers and staff of shelter.


Approximately to 45 minutes is located " West Esterillos " town where is possible to find  some  groceries and restaurants. And one hour by bus far from shelter is located Jaco Beach City where is possible to find more services as banks, hotels, casinos, restaurants, supermarkets and internet service.

The " Voluntary Work  " includes night patrol in company of staff of shelter protecting  turtles and its eggs of any kind of predator, moving and caring of the nest of turtles, take registers of the main features of turtles, liberation of the baby turtles on the sea and maintenance and cleaning of installations.


The volunteers lodge in a comfortable but rustic two story beach front ranch. In the ground floor is the kitchen, dining room, laundry area and bathroom.


The Program requires a minimum stay of Four Weeks.


The candidate to participate in this program must to:


  1. Fill the form " Offer of Voluntary Service " that allow us to have a previous profile of him/her self.

  2. Sign the " Agreement concerning to voluntary service in a conservation area " that demand  MINAE.

  3. Respect the " Voluntary Work "  rules.
